Staycation Vacation The Good Stuff Blueboost

A Staycation Is Just As Good As A Vacation

2017 is almost over. Isn’t that crazy? A year filled with laughs and cries, highs and lows, achievements and failures, feels like it has just flown by.

That said, we have one last celebration to look forward to: 2017 summer holidays. Doesn’t that sound good? Do you have anything planned? If not, no stress.

We’re of the opinion that staying at home over the festive season could be just as relaxing and fun as heading to the tropics.

Here are 5 things you can do to enjoy your home and city this December:

Splash about

Cooling down in the summer heat is always a bright idea. With the recent water restrictions in Cape Town, it’s going to be a long hot summer – unless you’re one of the lucky few who live right near the beach.

Here’s the thing – matter where you are in South Africa, you’re probably closer than you think to a public pool. Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg have some world-class pools with very reasonable entrance fees – no matter how big your family.

All you need to do is Google “public pools near me”, and you’ll be on your way to Splashtown.

Camping starts at home

Have a garden? Awesome. Don’t? No problem! You don’t need to head out to Addo Elephant Park or the Kruger to get a taste of the great outdoors. One of the funnest things to do with family is to set up a campsite at home.

Outside or in the lounge, it doesn’t really matter. All you need is a tent, a mattress, and a few sleeping bags. Don’t forget to prepare for an authentic camping experience. We’re talking braai food, s’mores and some good old ghost stories.

Take a Switch-off Day

Looking to break your routine? All you actually need to do is flip a switch. One of the best things to do to feel like you’ve taken a break from life is to take a break from anything that requires power. Cell Phones, laptops, iPads, the Internet – even your FM radio, all need to be off for a full 12 hours.

You know what that frees up time for? Books, conversation, drawing, soaking up the summer sun or even just sitting and clearing your mind for a couple of minutes.

We know, this sounds too simple to be true, but give it a shot and let us know what you think!

You’re a tourist

We live on one of the hottest tourist destinations in the world at the moment. Why don’t we ever take the time to enjoy the incredible sights and activities that people travel 1000s of kilometers to see?

National monuments, art galleries, natural reserves, and parks – all of them hold a particular South African beauty that most of us take for granted. All it takes is a quick Google, and you’ll be on your way to your staycation tourist attraction!

Grow your friendship group

When was the last time you actually spoke to the people in your neighbourhood? Obviously, this doesn’t go for all of us, but the fact of the matter is – we’re kind of disconnected from our immediate community these days.

Social media has made us feel like we’re with the people we love, no matter where we are and that’s awesome, but sometimes a connection to those around us can really change the way we feel.

This staycation tip is simple. All you need to do is invite 5-10 people from your neighbourhood to a braai or dinner at your home. All it takes is a simple knock on the door or a handwritten note, and you could change the way you see your neighbourhood. Enjoy!
